A Risky Business
Going about life with a fractured elbow is a risky business. I’m still as wobbly on my feet as I’ve been for the last couple of years, and now I’ve only one good arm to break my fall if my legs give way.…

Just like a fish, time has darted by, which is why my last World of the Zodiac video is a couple of days late. I can’t believe it’s a year since we first recorded these tic-enriched predictions.
Pisces, you’ve had the longest wait and I’m confident you won’t be disappointed, so without further delay here’s your video:
I hope that was insightful.…
Yesterday I wrote about the sort of questions my tics have been asking lately – during dinner with Leftwing Idiot and Poppy this evening they came up with another one:
“Have you thought about why St Petersburg’s paved with horseradish saliva?”…
I’m forever bombarding my friends and family with very strange ticced questions such as:
“Have you pissed on a unicorn in the last four days?”
or
“Can you get a kangaroo holding a jelly through your letterbox?”
But recently my questioning has taken a new turn and I’ve been quizzing people on what they’re thinking.…
I arrived home from work earlier to find a surprise gift on my kitchen table. It was a packet of hot chocolate with a note to say it was from Poppy and Zoë. I was touched but a bit puzzled as to why they’d suddenly decided drinking chocolate was the ‘must have’ gift for me.…
Most of my tics are completely random and not triggered by any external factors, but there’s a strange cluster of tics that do respond automatically to prompts from other people. They include:
• Jiggling my legs in a frenzied fashion if someone hums a jig
• Hitting my head if anyone says ‘Hit head’
• Meowing loudly if someone asks ‘What noise do cats make?’…
We’ve been having miserable weather recently with persistent grey skies and so much rain that large parts of the country are under water. We have to hope that before too long these grey days will give way to brighter drier ones as spring drifts in.…
The other day I described how I’d needed to make yet another trip to hospital after tipping my wheelchair over and fracturing my elbow.
The hospital staff were great – friendly, efficient and skilled. But I was surprised by how many of them directed questions and gave information to my support worker Zoë, rather than to me.…
Usually I have a very wide audience in mind when I write posts – parents, carers, colleagues, and anyone who’s curious about Tourettes, whether they have experience of tics or not. Today, though, I’m writing for a specific group of people – anyone with Tourettes who’s just been made to feel worthless for ticcing by a stranger.…
It’s been a bumpy start to the year so far but things have finally started getting back on track. My hands are doing much better and on Wednesday I was able to start using my much-loved Trekinetic wheelchair once again. It felt brilliant to be back in control and able to get around under my own steam.…
