Last night Leftwing Idiot and I were hanging out at the castle after work. I thought I heard him say something and because I didn’t catch it properly, I asked him to repeat it.

He looked bemused and said, ‘I didn’t say anything’. Then he added, ‘But you did just whisper, “Cat sex”’.

We both laughed but I felt strangely disconcerted that I hadn’t been able to recognise my own voice.

This isn’t the first time I’ve got confused about where a noise is coming from. Years ago I remember being mimicked by a stranger so convincingly that for a moment I’d thought it was me.
