In the early hours of the morning I was woken by a ‘ticcing fit’. So far nothing unusual, except this time I could feel the sensation of the fit without being able to move about at all.
This feeling of waking up unable to move is one I’ve had a few times before. Since I was a child I’ve occasionally had episodes of sleep paralysis. From what I understand this is occurs when the chemical that normally prevents you acting out your dreams remains active in your body longer than it should. This means when you wake up you feel awake but you can’t move.
This is a strange and surreal experience at the best of times, but this morning, with the added layer the motionless ticcing fit, it was particularly frightening.
I kept trying to make myself go back to sleep and eventually succeeded. After that I was able to wake up properly, and could at last call for help.
