Practical Intervention Fund - Mobility Edition

It’s been four years since we launched our Practical Intervention Fund (PIF). The fund enables disabled, deaf and neurodivergent people to experiment with different items which can support their wellbeing, without having to worry about the cost.

Last year, the format of the PIF changed so that we could continue providing items but in a more manageable and environmentally sustainable way. The decision helped us too, as a small, disabled-led team – especially because we’ve been navigating some challenging things this year. We’ve decided to continue with this format for 2025.

A circular image that mixes drawings and photographs. The logo for Touretteshero's Practical Intervention Fund is at the centre of the of the circle, PIF is spelt out in blocky letters. Around the edge of the logo are photos of mobility related products these include: a wheelchair cosy, compression socks, spoke covers, a freewheel off road wheel, a wheelchair bag and wheelchair push rim covers.

This year, the PIF is going to focus on items related to mobility, not providing actual mobility aids themselves but items that might help you use them more comfortably or improve how you feel about them. We know how important it is to feel comfortable and confident when you’re using mobility aids or finding new ways to move around. Jess has written a lot about her love of wheelchairs including this A to Z and a post on the essentials for new users.  Other members of the Touretteshero team use items which support their mobility.

We’ve pooled our knowledge for this year’s PIF and have got some really exciting items available – these are:

Wheelchair cosies – keep warm in the winter months (for adults or kids)
Wheelchair spoke covers – express your style and keep fingers out of your spokes
Patterned compression socks (one size) –gently support circulation in your legs
Pushrim covers – improve your grip when propelling your wheelchair
Freewheel – use an attachment that can help your manual wheelchair go over grass or more rugged terrain.
Crutch grips – attach to your crutches to make using them easier and more comfortable
Wheelchair cup holder – stay hydrated while on the move
Wheelchair bag – keep your essentials close with a small front mounted bag.

We have a limited number of each item, so it’s important that you apply only if you (or someone you’re supporting to apply) would definitely find one of these things helpful. You can apply for only one type of item. To apply, you need to:

• Live in the UK
• Be deaf, disabled, neurodivergent, and/or chronically ill. This includes those who have a mental health condition or experience mental distress, as well as anyone waiting for, or experiencing barriers to, accessing a diagnosis
• Be unable to purchase the item yourself

You can apply using our online form, or you can download an application pack containing plain text and audio versions of the form. You can also submit video or audio applications to the contact details below.

Applications will close on Wednesday, 3rd September 2025 at 6pm.

Because of the increased interest in the PIF over the years, we won’t be able to provide an item to everyone who applies. We acknowledge that application processes can be time-consuming and stressful, so we’ve tried to make it as straightforward as possible.

If you’d like any support with making an application, need information in a different format, or if you have any questions, please get in touch with Katie at solidarity@touretteshero.com, or on 07903 224 323.
