Festival Heroes

I’m back at home this evening after a great weekend. I’ve been thinking about some of the big and small acts of kindness that made it easier for me to enjoy the festival. Here are my top five heroes:

Two Mystery Men
Following our epic battle to reach the main stage last night my wheel chair was very muddy.…

No Stick in the Mud

I woke up this morning in a hot tent. I pulled myself out into a gloriously sunny day, leaving Poppy and Zoë sleeping inside. Fat Sister was busy doing some morning clearing up which included a bit of wheelchair maintenance.

Last night I lost a tyre in the mud.…

Bashment Bail Out

One of the situations in which I feel most frustrated about my restricted mobility is when I hear amazing tunes – I really miss being able to dance properly.

The wheelchair has improved this somewhat but dancing sitting down just isn’t as satisfying as the real thing.…

Backwards is the New Forwards

For several days my sister and her friend Claire have been puzzling over the exact dimensions of the boot of Claire’s car – specifically whether you can fit a folding wheelchair into it. This evening we put all their careful calculations to the test.…

Dress Code

Tomorrow I’m off to Secret Garden Party which is a three-day outdoor music festival in Cambridgeshire.

My friends Harry and Ollie are getting married later this year and the festival is where Harry’s chosen to have her hen do. Fat Sister, Poppy and our friend Zoë are going too: they’ll be my main support team.…

A Memorable Ride

I was chatting to my boss this afternoon about Saturday’s party. I asked if her son who’s five had, had a good time. I’d seen him a number of times throughout the day and he’d always been doing something different and seemed to be constantly on the go.…

“Good Afternoon Legoland Windsor”

About five years ago, long before the arrival of, “Biscuit,” I had an equally frequent tic. I would say, “Good afternoon Legoland Windsor,” as well as just, “Lego,” hundreds of times a day. The Lego era lasted a long time and was as strongly associated with me as “Biscuit” is now.…

Three Meals One Day

My birthday celebrations continued today and involved some of my favourite people and food.

Breakfast: Scrambled egg and a hot chocolate with Leftwing Idiot, Poppy and our friends Debby and John who happened to be in town for the weekend. We sat outside in a local café and enjoyed a brief spell of sunshine.…

Summer Party

At first glance, today didn’t look summery ¬– it looked grim. The grey cloud with rain coming out I could see from my bedroom window looked all too familiar. I’d been obsessively checking the forecast for the last week so it wasn’t an unexpected sight.…

Agghhh! That’s what it Feels Like

This evening something upset me. What it was doesn’t really matter, what interested me was that my tics didn’t overreact to the sadness.

The way I responded to feeling upset tonight was very different to the dramatic way I sometimes behave following trivial challenges or small emotions.…
