Access to Tears

It was a relief to close my eyes and go to sleep last night – they were sore and tired from the tears I’d been shedding hours earlier.

This morning I’m in a reflective mood, determined to write about the circumstances that once again left me sitting at work with tears flooding down my cheeks while my non-disabled colleagues got on with what they were doing.…

Frosty The Snowman

Christmas may already be a rapidly fading memory but my tics were in a festive mood this morning when I arrived at work, prompted by the beautiful blanket of frost covering the ground.

Out of the blue, Frosty The Snowman rose to the occasion to help me celebrate:

“Frosty the Snowman is ordering DVDs chronologically.”…

The Chihuahuas Are In Town

At the start of December I took part in a showcase of work by artists who’d been supported by the Unlimited programme. It was at the Toynbee Studios and we performed our show Backstage In Biscuit Land which was funded by their research and development award.…

The Lamp-Post’s Resolve

January’s a time for health kicks, but the mid-point of the month is often the moment when resolve starts to flag. This morning my tics were well aware of this when they started quizzing the lamp-post about its wellbeing:

“Lamp-post, have you been to the gym today?”…

“I Had Sex With A Cat”

I went swimming the other day with my friend and support worker Zoë. We were gliding along next to each other, chatting as we swam.

All of a sudden I ticced “I had sex with a cat.” Zoë turned towards me and said excitedly, ‘Really?’…

Involuntary Poems About Testis

“Your mother was a testicle,
Your father was a bear,
Between them they had a lot of flowing facial hair.”

“Electrical testicle, tearing up the night,
Glowing brighter than a lamp-post in a knight’s 10-denier tights.”

“Imagine playing Tetris with the testis of an ant,
a soundscape made of rhinos and Satsumas for a glove.”

Queen of the Pigs

Laura’s one of my closest friends and we’ve known each other for over sixteen years. We lived together or near each other for many years and still speak regularly on the phone. Laura lives a bit further away now and has two children, Ruby and my godson Leo.…

Test Drive

Our office was buzzing with chatter today about two new arrivals, not staff, or children, but go-karts for our youth-led track. They arrived in the early afternoon and looked amazing.

These aren’t just any old go-karts. They’re specially built with dual-controls so that two drivers can sit side-by-side.…

Hearing Old Words in a New Way

In yesterday’s post, I mentioned a rocky ‘ticcing fit’ I’d had that morning which had involved Kyle giving Will, who was supporting me, a hand. This was because my body was moving with such force I was shifting furniture about, knocking plants over and otherwise re-arranging the foyer of our office.…

Things I Haven’t Yet Fucked

I had a really rocky ‘ticcing fit’ earlier today. Will was supporting me, and my work friend Kyle came to help as well. As the fit drew to a close and my speech returned so did my vocal tics (in a confessional mood):

“I haven’t fucked anything today or yesterday, except:”

“A door”
“A horse”
“Strip lighting”
“Some cabling”
“Kettering”
and
“Tenerife’s bins.”…
