“Welcome to Biscuit Land”

This evening Touretteshero features in the third episode of Stephen Fry’s series Planet Word on BBC2. I spoke to Stephen back in February about having Tourettes and about the unusual relationship it gives me with language. We also talked about Touretteshero and why it’s important to me.

www.touretteshero.com is all about celebrating the humour and creativity of Tourettes. It’s not about mocking or commiserating – it’s about reclaiming the most frequently misunderstood syndrome on the planet. It’s for everyone – for the curious, for the creative, for those with and without Tourettes and for anyone who likes comedy that takes risks.

Often funny, sometimes shocking, my tics are carefully catalogued on the site for you to read and enjoy. Only 10% of people with Tourettes have swearing tics but because I’m one of them, some of the content of the site may shock or offend. Editing this out would be like editing out my disability so, by switching to SafeMode you can make all the explicit content disappear.

Since I met with Stephen, Touretteshero’s gone from strength to strength. You can check out the growing gallery of amazing tic-inspired artwork and read about the challenges and surprises of living with Tourettes in my daily blog.

We’ll be officially launching Touretteshero on 27th October. If you live in London you can join us to celebrate at our Launch Party in Brixton. With a line up of fantastic DJs and live performances, this is an event not to be missed. Buy your ticket here now.

After nearly two years of hard work, Touretteshero is finally here to start changing the world, one tic at a time.

I understand that this episode was about swearing, so that was the focus of the interview, but I’d have preferred it to mention somthing about the random words too. I think of random complex vocal tics as being the connections made in everyone’s heads as they find the right words to express things, except in us some of those extra nonsensical connections are voiced. It would be interesting if it looked at something like that, and why certain words were used. Or even why swear words are used.
